How Does B2B Marketing Work?

What exactly is B2B? B2B stands for business to consumer. It is an industry term that is used to specify a range of tasks, transactions, or relationships involving two or more businesses or organizations. Common industries using B2B are:

In business-to-business, one business conducts a specific commercial transaction with another company. This usually happens when: a. the products or services being exchanged are similar in nature, or b. the organizations are in the same vertical sector (i.e. retailing/food service and engineering/aeronautics).

One example of a typical b2b transaction is the buying and selling of raw materials. Companies often conduct this type of business-to-business transaction by purchasing raw materials from one supplier at a low price and selling them to another company at a higher price. Another common example of a business-to-business transaction that occurs often in the food service industry is the purchasing of food ingredients and equipment from a supplier and then reselling them to a restaurant or production facility. The third type of common business-to-business activity takes place when companies provide consulting services to other companies or another industry and they sell their specialized knowledge to another organization.

In the last couple of years, the number of companies involved in B2B has been increasing steadily. The reasons for the increased popularity of B2B are varied, but most researchers attribute this rise in business-to-business activity to the increased globalization of businesses. Globalization allows for more businesses to conduct business-to-business transactions, resulting in a global market for goods and services. Another reason for the recent growth of B2B is the growing interconnectivity of people through the Internet.

In recent years, the Internet has also begun to serve as an effective means of communication between businesses and consumers. Online marketing is becoming more popular with many companies because it allows for greater readability and greater opportunities for interaction. Since the Internet has become a major source of communication between people, many companies are beginning to utilize B2B marketing as a way to promote and advertise their products and services. The Internet is also providing many small businesses with the opportunity to advertise their products and services in a cost effective manner. Because Internet marketing is relatively new, it is difficult to determine whether or not b2b marketing is having a successful impact on the sales of products and services.

As more businesses utilize B2B methods of advertising and promotion, more consumers have come to realize that these types of businesses are a viable option. Consumers who purchase items and services online are more likely to purchase a product from a local, small business because they are more likely to be personally involved with the items and services that they are purchasing. With online marketing, small businesses can reach directly into the homes of their target consumers and even target individuals who may live in other parts of the country. Because Internet-based marketing is so new, it is difficult to determine whether or not the impact of marketing on the bottom line will be a positive one or not. However, the many positive aspects of b2b marketing will likely outweigh any negatives.
